Stay in tune with new techniques and trends

It’s easy to go on autopilot and stick to what you know in the salon. You know what works and how you can make your day run as smoothly as possible, but sometimes you can get stuck in a rut when it comes to expanding your services.
Even though there’s nothing wrong with sticking with a method that you know you can deliver to perfection, it’s important to stay up to date with styles and colours that are in demand. For example, highlighting caps are now a thing of the past, and foils and meche took over as the best (and most comfortable) method of applying highlights and lowlights. And even though some classic styles of hairdressing shouldn’t necessarily be left behind, it’s never a bad thing to add skills to your repertoire.
Keep your clientele
Providing trending colours and styles will not only help attract new clientele but will also help maintain current clients. Some clients often need a little encouragement to step out of their comfort zones, so giving them the option to try a different look will show them that you’re taking a personal interest in them.
Salon competition
Keeping up with trends will also help you stay ahead of your competitors. If you aren’t willing to try new things with your clients, they may be inclined to go somewhere that will. The same goes for people who are looking for a new stylist – they’re more likely to choose a salon that offers a wide selection of services for a range of ages. Make sure you’re at the top of their list!
Enhance your skillset
Trying new methods can add to your skills and have you wishing you’d have known them sooner! Sometimes, new techniques, colours and styling products are introduced for the better. They’re not there to make your life harder, they are meant to make the job easier with better results. Where your go-to methods may have been fool-proof, trying something new could save you precious time and money.
Pass Down Your Knowledge
If you’re a mobile one-man-band then that’s one thing, but if you’re nurturing new talent with an apprentice, then you need to take responsibility for their education by setting them up with traditional and new skills. Even if you may not be willing to expand your service menu, make sure there’s someone in your salon that can so that any potential client that comes through your door can be catered for.
Recommend A Friend
There’s no better compliment to your work than being scouted via a recommendation. People go on a hunt for a new hairdresser by clocking a fantastic haircut. If someone likes what they see, then that’s enough of a testimonial to come to your salon and ask for you personally. Another way people can see what you can do is on your social media pages. People like to see proof that you can deliver, so uploading any trending colours or styles to your Instagram grid is a great way to get new clients on board.
Brushing up on your skills comes with numerous benefits; it can do wonders for your confidence and give your career a necessary boost to keep ahead of the game. And you never know – you may never look back!
