Be Sure To Overshare About Aftercare

A lot gets shared during a hair appointment, but one secret that should never be kept to yourself is how your client can care for their hair at home. Creating good hair happens in the salon but keeping it intact isn’t all your responsibility. There are so many things that clients can do at home that won’t only benefit them but can save you time and money when it comes to their next appointment.
Of course, you can only offer advice and it’s no guarantee that they’ll take you up on it, but if you let them know the benefits then you can get the best out of their hair in their future appointments. Here are a few suggestions you can make to your clients and the reasons behind them.
Less heat
This is something hairdressers say until they’re blue in the face, but it always falls on deaf ears, thinking that we're just trying to spoil their fun. Applying constant heat on the hair is one of the biggest causes of hair damage, yet people can’t help themselves, no matter how much their hair is suffering. Clients may complain of breakage, faded colours and feel like their hair never grows and often it's because of an over-reliance on their straighteners.
If you can convince your client to lay off the heat, then they will see a vast improvement in the integrity of their hair. Overuse of straighteners can break their hair faster than the growth rate, so they will never see any real improvement in length.
Also, they may notice that their hair colour fades soon after their appointment. Heat damages the hair cuticle which causes colour molecules to break down and escape more easily than they would from a smooth, closed cuticle. This is also why hair colour appears dull and lifeless: the cuticle is no longer smooth, but rough and dry due to heat which makes it look less shiny and healthy.
The right shampoo
Giving advice on using the right shampoo is like giving your client a prescription for their hair. If they struggle with colour fading, recommend a shampoo or mask with a combined colour additive to keep their colour looking fresher for longer. If they come to you with dry hair, offer something which deeply nourishes which can prevent brittleness and breakage. Bond-building shampoos can also be recommended to those who come in for a blonde service. Bleach can be quite harsh on the hair, so keeping their hair as strong as possible can ensure they can keep having the same service.
Regular appointments
Sometimes clients need a little encouragement when it comes to booking another appointment. Leaving it up to them can often mean that it gets forgotten about until the last minute when their hair is in dire need of some TLC. However, some clients are reluctant to have too much hair cut off when it could do with a good two to three inches off to get it looking healthy again. Because too much time has passed between appointments, there may be more damage to the ends of their hair than there is growth.
The same goes for colour. When hair has faded to the point of no return, the colouring process may take longer than usual as their may be need for pre-pigmentation or band colour correction before you can begin the actual service. Leaving less time between appointments could shave an hour or two off an appointment and will be less expensive for the client in the long run.
Passing your expert knowledge on to your clients shows that you have their best interests at heart. If they do take your advice, then they will soon see the change in their hair and realise that it has the potential for so much more if looked after properly.
