Common Client Questions: Answered!

Part of the reason why your clients come to you is because of your extensive knowledge base about hair – what colour and style suits them best, what they can do to look after their hair at home and why box dyes are a BAD THING.
So here are just a few common questions that get asked in the salon that you may or may not already know the answer to! That way, you can answer your client with confidence and maybe learn a few things on the way.
Why is my hair colour fading so quickly?
Damage is usually the reason for a fast-fading colour. When the hair cuticle has been compromised by heat or heavy bleaching, colour molecules don’t absorb properly into the open cuticle which means it struggles to retain its initial vibrancy, or it can struggle hold colour at all. Fading can also be the result of over washing or using shampoos that are too harsh. Using sulphate-free shampoos and colour shampoos will help your hair colour look how it did when you left the salon.
Why isn’t my hair growing?
Everyone’s hair grows at different rates. The average person’s hair grows about half an inch per month, so it can be hard to tell unless your roots are coming through. If you’re finding that your hair is growing slower than usual, then you may need to invest in regular trims to keep the ends fresh and less prone to breakage.
Again, using heat excessively can make your hair brittle and be more susceptible to breakage – so it’s not that your hair isn’t growing, but it is snapping at the same rate as it is growing. Try booking into the salon more often and use at-home treatments to combat dryness.
Why is my hair so static?
You may find that after you’ve just washed your hair that hairs start to fly in all directions due to static. The static is caused by the loss or gain of electrons which produces an electrical charge when rubbed against things like brushes or styling irons. Dry hair and general lack of moisture aggravate this, as humidity helps dissipate electrical charges. Adding moisture with a touch of serum or leave in conditioner will help calm those static hairs.
Does hair get greasier quicker if I let it air dry instead of blow-drying?
Letting your hair naturally dry causes natural oils to transfer easier onto hair that is flat on the head as opposed to when it’s blow-dried, which dries out any residual oils. Air-drying your hair doesn’t necessarily make your hair greasier but quickens the process. Using a clarifying shampoo will remove excess oils on the hair and scalp and will hopefully make your clean hair last a bit longer between washes.
Is it bad to sleep with wet hair?
Even though it can be tempting in the summer months to sleep with wet hair to keep you cool, it isn’t advised that you do so. Hair is more fragile when wet, so can get damaged during a rough night’s sleep against a cotton pillow. It’s also bad for scalp health, as the moisture creates an environment for bacteria, which can lead to blocked follicles and dandruff. If it’s more convenient to sleep with wet hair, then you could invest in a satin or silk pillowcase which is gentler on the hair as it causes less friction.
