Fight The Frizz!

As summer slowly creeps in, we sigh a breath of relief as we shed our layers and dig the suncream out from the back of the cupboard. However, the strong UVs aren’t our only problem – frizzy, unruly hair takes centre stage as soon as we step out the front door.

What causes frizz?

A common cause of frizz is hair dryness or an over-use of heated hair stylers. The only way to eradicate damage is to have regular trims to maintain healthy hair and stay away from the straighteners. However, another cause can be the weather.

So what is it exactly about the summer weather that makes our hair decide it’s not going to play the game? Britain is predominantly a wet country, so on the occasion we get hot weather it ends up being muggy and humid. Heat and moisture open the cuticle, making it appear rough and uneven as opposed the smoothness of a sealed cuticle. Hair absorbs moisture from the air which causes the hair shaft to swell, causing a frizzy or fluffy texture.

Curly and wavy hair types are more prone to frizz due to their existing hair structure, which is why there are so many anti-frizz products on the market. So what can we do to get unruly hair under control?

Humid-resistant and anti-frizz products

There are a couple of ways to restore order when frizz is concerned. Humid-resistant hair products create a barrier on the hair to stop moisture penetrating the hair strand. They can also double up as heat protectors when using flat or curling irons. These products are often applied to damp, towel dried hair and blow-dried in to activate.

Similarly, anti-frizz products can be applied to ‘plump up’ the hair cuticle; often a deeply nourishing formula to combat dry, coarse hair. This anti-frizz technology can be used in anything from shampoos to serums. The difference between anti-frizz and anti-humidity products is that the latter aims to protect whilst the former is used to smooth hair in the styling process.

At Cool Blades, we stock a wide range of anti-frizz and anti-humidity products, varying from pre-wash treatments and post-styling sprays.

Guardian Angel by Osmo

This anti-humidity spray creates a water-resistant barrier on the hair which helps to fight frizz in humid weather conditions. The formula is lightweight and helps to soften hair to create smooth styles which last up to 4 washes.

Ultimate Smooth Range by Wella

The Ultimate Smooth range provides nourishment from within the hair using Squalane and Omega-9 technology which also creates a protective barrier on the outside. The range is available in a shampoo, conditioner, mask and hair oil and ultimately aims to hydrate hair and seal it inside.

Tecni Art Fix Anti-Frizz Spray by L’Oreal

This product is used on your finished style to seal and protect whilst providing a firm hold so your locks are locked in place. This can be used on any hair type and can be applied even as a regular everyday hair spray. The Tecni Art range also includes a smoothing gel cream to be applied pre-styling, creating a smooth finish that lasts up to 24 hours.

Keratin Alpha Sleek by L’Oreal Professional

Available in a shampoo, mask and serum, this smoothing range reinforces hair’s keratin structure as well as helping seal and protect. With continued use, the range can help ‘reprogram’ the hair to keep frizz at bay for up to two weeks post use, making it the perfect all-rounder for frizz prone hair.
