The Importance Of Investing In An Apprentice
Posted by Cool Blades | 17th Mar 2026
Employing an apprentice can have its pros and cons and can come with a separate set of responsibilities on top of running a salon. However, apprentices can be more of a help than a hindrance to your business if you’re willing to put the work into their training. Not only are you making a monetary investment with the revenue they can bring to the salon, but you’re also investing in their career by helping them learn skills that they can use for life. So how else can hiring an apprentice benefit your business?
Stay updated
Apprentices are generally younger and are in touch with the latest beauty trends. As social media is so prominent with the younger generation, they are more likely to know about trends that are circulating. Even though they are there to learn from you, you can also use the opportunity to learn from them. Whether it be a trending haircut or popular hair colour that’s doing the rounds, they can pass their knowledge on about emerging fashions, so you know what to expect when clients start requesting looks that require new techniques.
Teach the classics
Having students in the salon means that you have the responsibility to impart your wealth of knowledge onto them. After years in the business, you will have learnt things along the way which might not be taught in college curriculums now. Some techniques and services are no longer taught in college, but it doesn’t mean to say that they're outdated and irrelevant. The permanent wave drifts in and out of the college syllabus but are still requested in salons. It’s important that students learn as many skills as they can so they can build up their portfolio and provide services that might be popular in your salon.
Do it your way
A lot of hairdressing colleges just teach the basics – it’s up to you to give them the experience they need. Practise makes perfect, but if they have no opportunity to practice on a range of different clients, then their skills won’t improve. Your salon may also uphold a certain standard – not just in the service you provide, but in the running of the business in general. Once you have an apprentice trained to your level, you never have to worry about compromised standards.
Test your knowledge
In order to give an apprentice adequate training, you’ll need to show them what you can do. This puts your own skills to the test and could give you the refresher that you needed. There may be techniques that aren’t particularly your preference, but if you must teach them as a requirement then it could inspire you to use them in the future.
Keep your business going
Investing in a student could lead to them being an invaluable member of staff who can take on managerial duties and take the pressure off you. Depending on the future prospects of your business, it may be in your interests to invest in someone who has the potential to run the salon later down the line.
Investing in someone’s salon education may seem like an imposition to begin with, but when taking the future of your business into consideration, it could be the best thing you ever did. And you never know – you could learn some things along the way!
