Why Scissor Size Matters

There are so many factors to consider when choosing a pair of hairdressing scissors, but not everyone’s aware of them. Stylists often pick a pair that looks nice or sits in the “affordable” bracket — because they all do the same thing, right? Wrong.

When selecting your scissors, it’s important to choose a pair that’s tailored to you and the way you work. Even though we all had similar schooling in the basics of hairdressing (and probably started out with a questionable pair of scissors we’d rather forget), every stylist adapts their cutting style along the way — so why shouldn’t your scissors evolve too?

So, what sizes are there?

Scissors come in a range of lengths, commonly spanning between 4.5 inches and 7.5 inches, usually grouped into small, medium and large.

Medium: 5.5" – 6.5"

We’ll start with medium because it’s the most common size — it fits the average hand and works well for most stylists. A medium scissor is a great all‑rounder: perfect if you’re unsure which size to pick, and ideal for switching between different styles and techniques throughout a busy day. Think of it as your “safe bet” scissor — reliable, versatile and ready for whatever walks through the salon door.

Small: 4.5" – 5.0"

They say good things come in small packages, and small scissors definitely prove the point. These are perfect for stylists who specialise in shorter hairstyles and precision work. Aside from fitting comfortably in smaller hands, they shine in tasks that need careful control — fringe trims, cutting around ears, sharp lines and tidy detailing.

Barbers may be particularly partial to smaller blades, especially with modern men’s styles leaning more towards finer, intricate details.

Large: 6.5" – 7.5"

Large scissors do the opposite of small ones — instead of intricate details, they’re built for big statements and heavy cutting. Think blunt lines, scissor‑over‑comb work and strong shapes.

Longer blades naturally cover more ground, cutting evenly around the head with each chop instead of endless snipping with a smaller scissor. Stylists with a larger hand span may also find this size more comfortable and balanced.
